The World University Winter Games have started in Turin
The party of University Sport has begun. The FISU 2025 World University Winter Games started this Monday, January 13, in Turin (Italy) with an opening ceremony that took place at the Inalpi Arena and where more than 2,000 university athletes from 57 countries paraded.
Although Monday was the opening and celebration day, there were already some athletes who took advantage of the day to participate in the free training sessions; however, the first competitions did not start until yesterday, Tuesday. This edition, the 32nd, will last 10 days, until January 23.
The Games calendar will feature competitions in a variety of disciplines that promise great performances by the world's best university athletes. Specifically, 96 finals will be contested in 11 different disciplines: alpine skiing; cross-country; biathlon; ski jumping; snowboarding (whose events will be held in Bardonecchia); curling; figure skating (to be held at the Palavela in Turin); speed skating; ice hockey; and Nordic combined.
For the moment, France is the country that has won the most medals in this edition (leading the medal table with 4 medals, 3 gold and 1 silver), followed by Finland and Ukraine (each country has won 1 gold medal respectively). However, these positions have been achieved during the first day of competitions, with today and another 8 days still ahead, in which anything can happen and the medal ranking can change radically.
In addition, for the first time in history, Paralympic athletes will compete in the same event as non-disabled athletes in the University Winter Games; and Paralympic sport has been added in the disciplines of alpine skiing and cross-country skiing. A fact that shows FISU's commitment to the inclusion of these athletes.
