Maradona will be laid to rest in a mausoleum in Buenos Aires as of 2025
Diego Maradona will have a special place for his eternal rest. This Tuesday, the Argentinean courts gave the green light to move the legendary footballer's remains to a mausoleum to be built in Buenos Aires, specifically in the Puerto Madero neighbourhood. This decision comes after a request by the star's children, who are seeking to pay a permanent tribute to their father.
The Criminal Court N°3 of San Isidro was in charge of approving the transfer. Maradona's remains, which until now rested in the Jardín de Bella Vista cemetery in San Miguel, will be relocated to a shrine that will bear the name ‘Memorial del Diez’. This mausoleum will be open to the public and is scheduled to open in 2025.
The Diez Memorial: an eternal tribute
The future Diego Maradona mausoleum, also known as the ‘M10 Memorial’, will be a place of pilgrimage for the millions of fans of ‘El Pelusa’. The project was promoted by his heirs, Dalma, Gianinna, Jana and Dieguito Fernando, who last year had already publicly announced the initiative in honour of their father.
The monument will be built at an emblematic site in the Argentine capital, the Explanada del Bajo, a space that will be accessible on foot from the Plaza de Mayo, symbolising his closeness to the Argentine people, with whom Maradona was always deeply connected. According to the former footballer's children, this will be the place where their father ‘will rest in peace’ and where fans will be able to pay tribute to him on a permanent basis.
Since his death, Maradona's children have made no secret of their desire to create a place of recognition for their father, a figure who transcends football and has been an inspiration for generations. The ‘M10 Memorial’ will be a place to remember his legacy and for fans to show their affection in a tangible way.
The process after his death
Maradona died on 25 November 2020 at the age of 60, the victim of acute pulmonary oedema complicated by chronic heart failure, according to an autopsy carried out after his death. The ex-player's final days were the subject of an investigation due to doubts about the medical treatment he received at his home.
The cause of his death was described as ‘cardiorespiratory arrest secondary to acute pulmonary oedema’, caused by acute left ventricular failure. This clinical condition led to a crisis which, according to medical reports, lasted only a few minutes.
Following Maradona's death, eight members of the medical team in charge of his care have been charged with manslaughter, including neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque, psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov and psychologist Carlos Díaz. Other health professionals who attended the idol are also implicated, such as the doctor in charge of coordinating his home care, Nancy Forlini, and several nurses and coordinators.
What's next: the trial of the doctors
The court that authorised the transfer of Maradona's remains, made up of judges Maximiliano Savarino, Veronica Di Tommaso and Julieta Makintach, is also responsible for trying the defendants in the case of the former footballer's death. The trial is scheduled for March 2024, and is expected to shed light on the role played by the medical team in the last days of ‘Diez's’ life.
For many, this trial will be a key piece in the quest for justice for such an iconic figure as Maradona. The accusations against the medical team are based on the alleged negligence in the care the ex-footballer was supposed to receive, which would have led to a fatal outcome.
Maradona's legacy lives on
With the future ‘M10 Memorial’, Argentina and the football world are preparing to honour the memory of Diego Maradona in a special and lasting way. This space will not only serve as a place for fans to pay tribute to the idol, but also to keep alive the legacy of one of the greatest players football has ever produced.
The construction of the mausoleum in Buenos Aires promises to become a meeting point for all those who want to remember the magical moments that ‘Pelusa’ gave on the pitch, from his unforgettable performance in the 1986 World Cup to the successes with his clubs. Maradona remains, even after his death, one of the most loved and admired figures in world football, and his memory will be immortalised in this resting place which, like himself, will be eternal.
