Antonio Barrul, the boxer who punched a man for insulting his partner, faces the possibility of compensation of 90,000€
On May 1, a children's screening at a movie theater in León turned into an unexpected scene of violence. What was supposed to be an afternoon of entertainment turned into chaos when a man began to display extremely aggressive behavior towards his partner. This behavior, laden with insults and threats, not only disturbed those present, including numerous minors, but led to an escalation of violence that went viral on social networks.
The focus of the controversy fell on Leon boxer Antonio Barrul, who was at the cinema as a spectator. Upon observing the altercation, Barrul attempted to intervene peacefully to calm the aggressor. However, the situation quickly deteriorated. The young man, far from calming down, began to insult and threaten Barrul, prompting the fighter to act in self-defense. The confrontation culminated in a series of punches and a knee that occurred in the lower part of the hall, in front of an astonished audience.
Police intervention was swift. After receiving the tip-off, the officers arrested the aggressor, while Barrul, aware of the tense atmosphere and the presence of minors, apologized to those present for the incident. This act of apology did not prevent the situation from generating a deep division in public opinion.
The conflict has polarized society: on the one hand, many praise Barrul's bravery in intervening to protect a woman in danger; on the other, there is criticism of the use of violence to combat other violence, questioning whether the boxer's response was the most appropriate.
The boxer, in recent statements to Efe, has stated that he has no problem in going to court to resolve the conflict after the complaint filed by the assaulted. Barrul defends that his reaction was motivated solely by the attempt to protect the victim of the mistreatment and considers the accusations against him to be unfounded. "My only intention was to try to defend a woman who was being mistreated," explained the boxer, who is currently recovering from an injury sustained in his last fight, in which he emerged victorious against Romanian Alexandru Ionita.
The case has taken an unexpected turn with the request of the assaulted fighter's lawyer, who has demanded a financial compensation of 90,000 euros to avoid the trial. Barrul and his defender have rejected this demand, arguing that his response was proportional and appropriate given the circumstances.
In addition, the incident has been amplified on social networks, where a video recorded by a spectator has gone viral. In it, the intensity of the confrontation and Barrul's subsequent intervention can be seen, which has added fuel to the fire of the public debate.
On May 6, the assaulted filed a formal complaint for assault, which confirmed that prior to the physical confrontation there was an intense verbal exchange. This complaint has added an additional layer of complexity to the case, which is now in the hands of the judicial system.
As the case unfolds, public opinion remains divided, and the incident at the Leon movie theater continues to be the subject of discussion and analysis. Meanwhile, Barrul continues his recovery process and prepares to face the legal challenges ahead, defending his actions in a context that has generated a wide range of reactions in society.
